Summary
• Approximately 80% of the global opioid supply was consumed in US that indicates iatrogenic opioid abuse is serious.
• Taiwan ’s opioid use is still much lower than developed countries.
• Persons with mental illness having greater odds of chronic pain compared to the general population without these disorders.
• A clinical and ethical policy focusing on pain intensity reduction by means of titrated opioid therapy may have contributed to the rapid escalation in prescribing opioid use, abuse, and overdose seen in the US and Canada.
• Iatrogenic opioid dependence and abuse will become a problem in the future, it deserves in-depth discussion and
attention.
